What is the money line in football?

Posted by Steve Leighton

In football betting, the money line is another wagering option in Las Vegas. Instead of using a point spread, the odds makers at the casino sports books provide fixed odds on a team to win the game outright.

The greater the disparity between the perceived skills of the two teams competing the higher the sports book will set the odds. For example, a high quality team could have its odds to win set at 1-4 (profit of 1 for every 4 bet) meaning it would take a $400 wager to produce $100 profit. This means a $400 bet would cash out for $500.

In this same example the underdog would be 4-1 (profit of 4 for every 1 bet), meaning it would take $100 wager to produce a $360 profit (the $40 shortage is the house cut). The house cut, also known as “juice”, “vig” or “vigorish” is normally 10% of the underdog payout when betting the money line.

Both our previous topic covering the “betting line/point spread” and this one on the “money line” are considered “side” selections. Another option when wagering on football is “total” selections which we will discuss later.
